There’s a version of web design wisdom that circulates through marketing decks and UX workshops — confident, heavily anecdoted, almost entirely unexamined. It tells you that red creates urgency, that users read in an F-pattern, that you have exactly seven seconds before someone leaves forever. Some of it is grounded in real research. A lot of it has quietly drifted from “observed tendency” into “universal law.” Understanding how web design shapes the choices people make online requires clearing out the folklore first, because the myths don’t just mislead designers — they lead to sites built on faulty assumptions that real users consistently confound.
The Myth That Users Always Read in an F-Pattern
The F-pattern reading research from Nielsen Norman Group is real. Eye-tracking data from 2006 showed that many users scanning text-heavy pages did move their gaze in a rough F-shape — heavy horizontal attention at the top, lighter attention further down, occasional left-side scanning below that. The problem is what happened to that finding between the lab and the design studio.
It became a rule. Put the most important content in the top-left. Never put anything meaningful in the right column. Build your information hierarchy around the F. But subsequent research, including Nielsen Norman’s own follow-up work published more than a decade later, found that reading patterns vary enormously based on page type, user intent, and visual design itself. Gallery pages produce very different scan paths than article pages. Highly visual designs break the F entirely. What the research does support is that page load speed matters enormously, and that visual complexity above the fold influences immediate engagement. A page that takes four seconds to load loses a measurable portion of its visitors before they’ve seen anything at all. A page that loads instantly but presents a wall of disorganized content loses another portion in the first few seconds of genuine engagement. Neither of these things is captured cleanly by “you have seven seconds.”
The myth leads to a particular kind of homepage anxiety — the compulsion to pack everything important above the fold, to write punchy three-word headlines, to compress nuance into a hero section that ends up communicating nothing clearly to anyone. Users do decide quickly. They don’t use a timer.
The Myth That Color Psychology Reliably Moves Decisions
Perhaps no design claim is more confidently asserted or less reliably replicated than color psychology. Blue builds trust. Red signals urgency. Green means go. The associations are memorable and they sell conversion optimization services extremely well. The evidence for them as universal drivers of user decision-making is far shakier.
Color associations are culturally mediated, individually variable, and highly dependent on context. White space feels clean in one cultural context and sparse in another. Red is danger in some settings and celebration in others. The research that supports specific color-behavior links almost always comes from single-culture samples, controlled conditions, and isolated design elements — not from the messy, multi-element pages that real users actually encounter.
What color does reliably influence is contrast-based attention. A button that visually pops against its background gets more clicks than one that blends in. That’s not a psychological mechanism specific to any color — it’s the basic visual principle of figure-ground relationship. The influence on decision-making comes from directing attention, not from the intrinsic meaning of a particular hue.
The Myth That More Features Mean Better Experience
This one is less a research misreading than a business instinct that contradicts what user research consistently finds. The idea that a richer, more feature-complete website gives users more to work with, and therefore more reasons to stay and engage, runs directly counter to cognitive load research. When users face a larger decision space — more navigation options, more product variants, more homepage elements competing for attention — they are more likely to do nothing.
The paradox of choice is real in web environments. Simplifying a homepage navigation from twelve items to five has repeatedly produced measurable improvements in click-through to key pages. Reducing the number of form fields on a registration page reduces abandonment. Streamlining checkout to fewer steps increases completion rates. The research here is consistent enough that “add something” should almost never be the first design instinct when conversion is low.
The Myth That Mobile Is Just a Smaller Desktop
A lot of sites were designed on desktop and then “made responsive” — meaning the layout collapses to single-column at smaller screen widths and the font scales down. This passes for mobile design in many organizations, but it misses most of what actually distinguishes mobile user behavior. Mobile visitors aren’t just using a smaller screen. They’re often in different physical contexts, with different levels of distraction, different session lengths, and different tolerance for friction.

Treating mobile as an afterthought produces sites that technically display on small screens but fail to support the decisions mobile users are trying to make. Strip away the myths and a few durable principles remain. Perceived credibility, driven by visual consistency and professionalism, genuinely influences whether users trust a site enough to engage with it. Page speed directly affects whether users have the opportunity to make any decision at all. Navigation clarity determines whether users can find the product, service, or content that would satisfy their intent. And visual hierarchy — the clear prioritization of elements through size, contrast, and whitespace — directs the attention that precedes every click.
These are less exciting than color psychology or the seven-second rule. They don’t have catchy names. But design’s influence on user decisions is most reliably found in these structural and functional dimensions, not in the persuasion shortcuts that dominate the popular conversation. The myths persist because they’re simple and they sell. Building a site worth using requires something harder: understanding what users actually need when they arrive, and removing every obstacle between that need and its fulfillment.
That is, ultimately, what good web design does. It doesn’t manipulate. It facilitates. The gap between those two things is wider than most conversion optimization decks want to admit.
